Report on the Wiltshire County Championships held on the W/E of 18th /19th April 2009 The withdrawal of No 1 seed Tim Mahoney owing to injury on duty as a police officer left the way clear for the much fancied No2 seed, Marcin Jaskowlski, the Hilperton clubs Polish ace and he seized the moment. He reached the men’s singles final after a testing semi-final against Terry Parkins (Chippenham). Scores 11-4 12-10 12-10. In the other semi Ian Packford (Westbury) had an intensive battle with Andrew Hodges (Hilperton) before a fifth end win with scores 11-9 11-7 9-11 8-11 11-9. In the final Packford had no answer to Jaskowlski’s powerful play and was very disappointed with his performance, scores were 11-4 11-8 11-3 to Jaskowlski who endorsed his recent west wilts men’s singles success. Jaskowlski teamed up with Glen Freeman, the Swindon postman, for a men’s doubles triumph against an excellent Packford/Hodges combination, 11-6 11-9 11-6. This again was a repetition of success in the West Wilts championships and the more remarkable as they had not played together previously. Undoubtedly Freeman’s excellent defence complements Jaskowlski’s power hitting and spin attack. The under 18 boys singles title was taken by Thomas Rendell (Chalk Valley) who beat No 1 seed Chris Pickard (Bradford on Avon TTC) 11-7 11-8 11-8 in a final which saw Pickard rather below his excellent seasons form which saw him unbeaten in West Wilts division 1. The under 15 boys singles was won by Alex Maclachlan (Westbury) who beat Thomas Penfold (Sanford) over 4 games 11-5 11-5 4-11 11-7. Alex moves into premier division levels from next season thanks largely to the massive encouragement at the very successful Westbury club. Ryan Marvell (Sanford) took the under 13 title from Ben Edwards, the previous holder in a very determined display 12-10 14-12 12-14 11-7. Again we see a young player with a very bright future in the game. The under 18 doubles saw Chris Pickard teamed up with Ethan Gunton (Sanford) win the final 10-12 11-5 11-6 11-8 against the excellent pairing of Alex Maclachlan and Thomas Jeffcott (Sanford) The consolation singles final was won by David Marshall (Bradford on Avon) who beat a very determined Thomas Rendell (Chalk Valley) 8-11 11-3 11-7 9-11 11-3. The Sunday events again started with the loss of a No 1 seed, this time Ray Powell (injury) in the veteran men’s singles. After matches in four groups the event progressed to the knock-out stage where the main surprise was the elimination of No 2 seed Terry Parkins by Glen Freeman 11-9 11-5 10-12 11-8. Freeman went out in turn to a rampant Richard Jones in an incredibly hard fought match 18-16 12-14 9-11 11-9 11-9. Meanwhile in the other semi Colin Thompson (Bradford on Avon TTC) recovered from a bad start to put out the Nationwide stalwart Peter Epps 2-11 13-11 15-13 11-9. Thompson couldn’t quite maintain the impetus and so the veteran men’s championship went to his Bradford club mate Richard Jones 12-10 11-8 11-7. The ladies singles was a group affair with Julie Dean (Devizes) the victor and last years winner, Swindon schoolgirl Ivona Swinstun as runner up, Julie then went on to take the veteran ladies event with Barbara Roberts (Poulshot) second. In the ladies doubles we saw some rather impressive play form all four players with the Ivona Swistun/Barbara Roberts pairing beat Julie Dean and Sue Stone (Dauntseys School) with scores 11-8 11-9 11-8. Peter Epps and Dino Ciorra, both of Nationwide club, took an impressive veteran doubles against the very strong pairing of Terry Parkins and Glen Freeman with 11-7 13-11 11-13 11-5. The mixed doubles was a repeat of last year with a win for Ivona Swistun and Chris Watkins (Westbury) this time against Julie Dean and Peter Epps 11-1 12-10 7-11 11-8. For the second successive year Tony Mileham of the Bradford club took the masters (over 60) singles title with Alan Duke (Northside) a previous winner the runner up after a group event. The loss of prominent seeds meant some problems for the officials and it was also rather a pity that both Eddie Roofe and Trevor Lloyd were unable to appear owing to commitments in another event (southern masters) Roofe and Lloyd have both been selected for the England squad (over 40 and over 50 respectively for a major event in Bulgaria in July.
