Report on the Wiltshire County Championships held on the W/E of 8/9 March
Saturday 8th March There was widespread disappointment that mens singles favourite Kevin Satchell had been forced to withdraw owing to an attack of influenza. This left Eddie Roofe the chance to take the title for a second year in succession. He was already expected to win the veterans event. Eddie duly obliged with a repetition of last years successes though it must be said that he was pushed hard in both events. In the men’s singles Tim O’Mahoney (Swindon and Westinghouse) put out Chris Watkins(Westbury) 8-11 11-4 11-3 11-7 but the no. 4 seed then fell to Terry Parkins who couldn’t find a finish in the fourth game but took a comfortable decider to reach the final for a first time ever. Scores 11-6 8-11 11-7 10-2 11-5. The much fancied Marcin Jaskolski (Hilperton) looked very certain at first against no.3 seed Trevor Lloyd (Trowbridge) but found form too late to lose 5-11 9-11 13-15. This set up Eddie Roofe for another 5 ender with Roofe the winner, after a blistering fourth game which saw him to the decider, scores 9-11 11-9 11-13 11-4 11-8. Eddie took the final against Terry Parkins again over five games with both players giving a clever display of varied attack and defence., scores 12-10 6-11 11-8 8-11 11-6. Terry was in some misery with a wrist problem but it was interesting to see Eddie call time-out when the pressure was on in the last game. This is a tactical move frequently used at top levels. In the men’s doubles semi-final the Jaskolski brothers beat the Rendell brothers, Tom and Mark from Salisbury 11-8 12-10 11-3 having earlier beaten the Eddie Roofe/Billy Ho pairing in three 11-9 games. In the other semi-final Trevor Lloyd and Terry Parkins beat a very strong combination of Richard Jones (Bradford) and Ian Packford (Trowbridge) having fought back from two games down, scores 8-11 12-14 11-8 11-8 11-8. The final saw the polish pair play with flair and confidence after losing the first end to take the title, scores 8-11 11-6 11-9 11-8 . The under 18 boys final between David Walton (Westbury) and Billy Ho (Warminster) was another classic with David recovering from a poor third game to win the other two, scores were 12-10 9-11 5-11 11-9 12-10/ Billy was not discouraged and then joined Thomas Jeffcott (Swindon) to beat the Rendell brothers 7-11 11-7 11-9 15-13 and the David Walton/Adam Valovec pair 11-9 12-10 6-11 11-9 to win the under 18 boys doubles final Sunday 9th March 2008 The following day the veteran men’s singles final was a tense affair with Eddie Roofe going 1-2 down against Trevor Lloyd who then lost the other two critical games by the narrowest of margins including clipped edge points to Eddie. The pressure was enormous with the two quite brilliant players each claiming their time-out breathers. The veteran doubles final saw title holders Terry Parkins and Trevor Lloyd retain their hold on the trophy when they beat Richard Clode (Bradford) and Peter Epps (Nationwide) in games 11-8 11-3 12-10 Tony Mileham (Bradford) won a hotly contested final to take the Masters (over 60) singles against Lionel Coles (Wilcot) 11-9 2-11 14-12 11-9 Salisbury’s Kane Taylor put out the favourite Alex MacLachlan (Westbury) 13-15 11-8 11-9 11-13 11-6 in the under 15 boys singles semi final only to lose in the final to Thomas Jeffcott (Swindon) 5-11 4-11 11-8 5-11 In the Men’s consolation singles Chris Pickard beat his
Bradford colleague Noel Sewell 11-3 11-8 12-10 before he lost the final to Billy
Ho 6-11 3-11 8-11 The mixed doubles final was a repeat of last year’s success for Chris Watkins(Westbury) and Ivona Swistun with a win this time against Trevor Lloyd a stand in partner for Barbara Roberts (Devizes) following the injury to Richard Jones, scores 9- 9-11 11-9 11-4 11-6 Julie Dean (Devizes) Beat Barbara Roberts and Sue Stone (Dauntseys School) for the veteran ladies title. Ivona Swistun and Barbara Roberts beat Julie and Sue for the ladies doubles, 11-6 3-11 11-5 11-8. Ivona took the under 15 girls with a win against Jenna Dumpleton (Kennet Vale) completing another successful championships by winning the ladies singles final against Julie Dean. 11-8 12-10 11-7 and the under 18 girls singles against Nicole Law (Westbury) 7-11 11-7 11-5 11-9 The events officials were Andy Seward, International Umpire as referee with Nick Osland (Calne) ,Bob Erskine (Salisbury), and Noel Sewell (Bradford ) the umpires. Sue Stone Sue started her table tennis career in a team of girls at Etchilhampton who played in the village hall all of whom went on to become well known in the county. Her parents Mr and Mrs H L House were prominent personalities in the Devizes league until her mother’s premature death. Les House’s contribution was recognised by the award of the Kathleen Waters memorial shield in 1982. Sue, following in her father’s footsteps, received the same prestigious award in 1999. By then she had already served from her later schooldays over 33 years as secretary of the Devizes league and went on to complete 40 years. Running in parallel were numerous years as secretary to the Wiltshire TT Association, a demanding and time consuming role, in addition to which she has been in demand for the Wiltshire Veterans squad in recent years. Committed to her full time admin job at Dauntsey’s school she plays a regular part in various activities inclusive of the school table tennis team. Sue has reduced her load of commitments so that more time might be spent with husband mike and their grandchildren. On completion of the Wiltshire closed championships, trophies were presented by Mr Andy Seward, international umpire just back from the world championships in China. Noel Sewell, Chairman of the West Wilts league gave a brief outline of Sue’s dedicated service to table tennis in Wiltshire and invited Andy to make a further presentation to a most deserving recipient described as universally popular and quite irreplaceable.
